When it comes to scuba diving hot spots, Bora Bora, part of the Tahitian Islands in the French Polynesian, seems to always appear at the top of the list. While divers usually have different interests when diving, whether it be sunken ship diving, treasure hunting, different coral reefs or the variety of marine life, Bora Bora is one of the most colorful offerings.
Scuba diving in Bora Bora can be done at any time during the year, however the dry season, between April and November, tends to be the best time. With the lack of rain and storms during this time period, there is little to stir up the water which provides incredible visibility underwater which can reach up to 130 feet.
The types of dives available in Bora Bora include diving in the lagoon, diving beyond the reef and diving the Teavanui Pass.
Inside the lagoon, the waters are primarily shallow in nature, though you can find some canyons and deeper areas to dive there. In the canyons, you quite often will find moray eels, manta and eagle rays and a nice variety of tropical fish.
Once you get outside of the reef, you will notice the the ocean’s floor drops off very quickly. Not only will you find the living coral reef and a nice blend of tropical fish, you can also see quite a few ‘big fish’ here including sharks. You can see barracudas, jack fish, turtles, tuna, dolphins, moray eels and a variety of sharks such as the lemon shark and black tip sharks. But don’t worry, the sharks in Bora Bora are not aggressive towards humans. They tend to be more afraid of you than you are of them.
When diving in the pass, you will find a high amount of fish and eagle rays here and the coral is simply amazing. This pass is where the lagoon and the ocean tend to meet and has a high nutrient content provided by the tidal flows which attracts a larger assortment of marine life.
No matter where you decide to dive in Bora Bora I am sure you will have a memorable and enjoyable dive. You will find a handful of dive shops and tour guides available to you all around the island or you can check with your resort as well.
