Of all the islands that make up the French Polynesian, Bora Bora is the most beautiful and magical of them all. It’s overall beauty and essence is something that words and pictures can only describe so much. You really have to be there and experience it first hand to truly understand.
There is the main island of Bora Bora that lies in the center of a multi-blueish colored lagoon. Surrounding the main island are svereal smaller islands, known as motu or motu islets. The island and the surrounding motus are surrounded by a protective coral barrier often referred to as a protective necklace. It’s quite the beautiful necklace if you ask me.
The surrounding motus make for the perfect secluded getaways and the location of several luxurious resorst that feature the world famous, overwater bungalows. It was Hotel Bora Bora that first built these overwater bungalows in the French Polynesia and the soon became a smashing success and duplicated around the entire area. Though these bungalows are exceptionally know as the place for honeymooners, regardless of your reason for visiting Bora Bora, you have to stay in one of the overwater villas at least once.
Around the main island, there is only one main road for you to travel. This road, or “pass” as it is often referred to, makes for a nice tour of the island and will take you through the colorful Tahitian villages. You can also see Old World War II cannons and bunkers and spectacular archaeological sites. You can take this tour on your own or take one of the tour buses or tour packages offered on the island.
Whatever you reason for visiting Bora Bora, you can rest assured that there is something enjoyable for everyone. After all, it is a “magical” island.
Scuba Diving In Bora Bora

When it comes to scuba diving hot spots, Bora Bora, part of the Tahitian Islands in the French Polynesian, seems to always appear at the top of the list. While divers usually have different interests when diving, whether it be sunken ship diving, treasure hunting, different coral reefs or the variety of marine life, Bora Bora is one of the most colorful offerings.
Scuba diving in Bora Bora can be done at any time during the year, however the dry season, between April and November, tends to be the best time. With the lack of rain and storms during this time period, there is little to stir up the water which provides incredible visibility underwater which can reach up to 130 feet.
The types of dives available in Bora Bora include diving in the lagoon, diving beyond the reef and diving the Teavanui Pass.
Inside the lagoon, the waters are primarily shallow in nature, though you can find some canyons and deeper areas to dive there. In the canyons, you quite often will find moray eels, manta and eagle rays and a nice variety of tropical fish.
Once you get outside of the reef, you will notice the the ocean’s floor drops off very quickly. Not only will you find the living coral reef and a nice blend of tropical fish, you can also see quite a few ‘big fish’ here including sharks. You can see barracudas, jack fish, turtles, tuna, dolphins, moray eels and a variety of sharks such as the lemon shark and black tip sharks. But don’t worry, the sharks in Bora Bora are not aggressive towards humans. They tend to be more afraid of you than you are of them.
When diving in the pass, you will find a high amount of fish and eagle rays here and the coral is simply amazing. This pass is where the lagoon and the ocean tend to meet and has a high nutrient content provided by the tidal flows which attracts a larger assortment of marine life.
No matter where you decide to dive in Bora Bora I am sure you will have a memorable and enjoyable dive. You will find a handful of dive shops and tour guides available to you all around the island or you can check with your resort as well.

Here are 3 underwater attractions you should check out while visiting Bora Bora:
- The Bora Exotic Lagoonarium: This is the most popular attraction of tourists in Bora Bora. It is here you actually get into the water with a qualified underwater guide and get the opportunity to swim and interact with the creatures of the sea. You will find yourself swimming alongside dolphins, sharks, turtles, rays and other other exotic tropical fishes. This is the real deal, not to be confused with The Lagoonarium in Tahiti where you can not get in the water with the creatures.
- The Aqua Safari: If you like the thought of scuba diving and would like to see the beautiful underwater world of Bora Bora, but you are not certified to scuba dive, don’t worry, we have a solution. The Aqua Safari has a large, yet comfortable, helmet that allows you to view the underwater surroundings without the need for scuba dive tanks or weight belts. This is an easy to use, non-compression option that is safe and fun for all ages.
- The Aquascope: Another way to explore the amazing underwater world of Bora Bora is to take a ride in the unique Aquascope. This is a semi-submersible watercraft that cruises you around the various hot spots of the Bora Bora Lagoon while you are safely submerged below the water’s surface with amazing views of the sea life of the lagoon. This is great for those that want to stay dry in the comfort of a watercraft while getting the opportunity to everything available under the seas.
These three activities will provide something for everyone. You can choose one or choose them all depending on you schedule and desires while enjoying your Bora Bora vacation.
